Soccer is currently on everyone's lips: while the European Championship is slowly coming to an end in Germany, former German national team coach Hansi Flick has taken up his new position as coach at FC Barcelona - and sent his players straight to the dentist. Find out what it's all about here.

Oral health has a significant impact on the whole body. And in many ways: firstly, a healthy oral cavity is always the best immune barrier. It ensures that viruses and bacteria are warded off and therefore cannot enter the body in the first place. Missing teeth and misaligned teeth can also cause a variety of symptoms ranging from headaches, back and joint pain to vision problems.

The reason: the skull and lower jaw are functionally closely connected. If the lower and upper jaw do not fit together correctly, the system of muscles, nerves and joints changes. Tension or permanent poor posture can have a negative impact on the temporomandibular joints via the cervical spine - and from there can be transmitted to the entire body.

Oral health and metabolism: a close interplay

Misaligned teeth also affect the metabolism - which is a decisive factor for athletes in particular. If food intake is impaired by inflammation in the mouth or misaligned teeth, this has a direct impact on digestion and therefore on the supply of nutrients to the muscles. Recurrent muscle injuries are the consequence. One prominent example is German international Jamal Musiala: repeatedly plagued by muscle problems, Musiala had his wisdom teeth extracted in 2023 - and thus got his complaints under control.
